The HSCL (Home School Community Liasion) Scheme was set up in Muine Bheag Vocational School in September 2000. The HSCL Scheme is a preventative strategy, which is targeted at pupils who are at risk of not reaching their full potential in the educational system.
The aim of the scheme is to promote partnership between home, school and the community to ensure that every child participates fully in school life.
The coordinator of the scheme is Máire Lee. Máire works with parents and teachers with the aim of developing partnership and the 'whole-school' approach to education. The scheme recognises parents as the primary educators of their children and Máire supports them in this important role.
As well as home visits, she organises courses for parents in the school, such as 'Flower Arranging', 'Art', 'Computers' etc. These courses not only help parents to learn new skills and increase their self-esteem, but also gives parents important time to themselves.
Máire has also set up a 'Local Committee' in her area. The committee has eighteen members, including parents, teachers and representatives from voluntary and statutory bodies. It's purpose is to deal with issues in the community that stop effective learning from taking place, such as school attendance issues, school transfer issues, bullying issues, etc. The Muine Bheag Local Committee has been very successful in doing work in each of these important areas.
